How to Meet the Extraordinary Difficulties of Our World

“In a world of noise, confusion and conflict it is necessary that there be places of silence, inner discipline, and peace. In such places love can blossom.” Thomas Merton

I know we are all grappling with how to meet the extraordinary difficulties of our world. I seem to vacillate these days between effort, worry, and anger. Hard work IS required. There is much to worry about. We have every right to be enraged by the powers that be. The time of sitting on the sidelines is over and everyone has got to take a stand. (That’s how I feel.)
.
I’m getting myself all worked up just typing this. Where does such strength come from? How can we retain sharpness of mind? Kindness of heart? And, most important, how can we meet aggression with full ferocity without being consumed by our own aggression?
.
Straight up, I don’t know the answer to these questions. But I do know this: if I keep working, working, working and never, ever give myself space to retreat, everything I do and say (and think) will reflect my fatigue and confusion rather than my wisdom and compassion. My friends. You MUST take time to rest, whether for an hour or a day, a weekend or a week. Or a minute. Everything counts.
.
The best rest is silence. The practice of silence is meditation. The best environment for silence is community. The result is the recovery of openness, insight, and grit.
.
If you have a chance to take retreat within community (it is just so much harder to do it alone), please take it. (I’m teaching a meditation retreat this weekend at @kripalucenter and you are massively invited to join me there. We will support each other to go within and recover vitality and power. Link is in bio.)
.
In the meantime, I’m visualizing you at your ease and in full possession of all your powers and all your love.

.
We can do it.
